What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is a dental field focused on diagnosing and resolving issues impacting the health and functionality of your smile. This can involve a variety of treatments, including but not limited to:
- Fillings
- Crowns
- Bridges
- Dentures
- Dental implants
You may notice there’s some overlap between what is considered cosmetic dentistry and what is restorative. Indeed, many treatments meant to restore function also restore your smile’s aesthetic appearance too!
Types of Dental Procedures That Are Restorative
Restorative dentistry revolves around preserving, restoring, and enhancing the health and functionality of your teeth. Rise Dental Studio's diverse offerings ensure we meet your unique needs, whether it's filling a cavity or replacing missing teeth.
Fillings
Our proactive approach treats even the most incipient (earliest) decay with advanced and minimally invasive cavity treatments. If we detect decay during an exam, we will get a closer look and recommend the most conservative option that will work for your situation. The first stop for cavities is dental fillings, or tooth fillings. At Rise Dental, these generally fall into two categories:
- Early, or incipient, decay can sometimes be fully addressed with our low-intervention, no-drill treatment known as Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus.
- If you require a conventional filling, we’ll restore your tooth with a tooth-colored composite filling. The composite resin matches the color of your natural teeth for a totally seamless appearance.
At Rise Dental Studio, our commitment to patient education and providing precise advice ensures that you receive the treatment you need, fostering a trusting and transparent relationship. If your unique situation calls for a higher level of intervention, we’ll fill you in on your options, recommend a treatment plan, and help make the whole thing manageable.
Onlays
Custom-designed onlays provide a brilliant middle ground between fillings and crowns for teeth with damage or decay. Our onlays are:
- Fabricated from durable and tooth-colored Emax or Zirconia material.
- Designed to repair decay that spans more than a filling can address, replacing one or more cusp(s) of a back tooth.
- Restorations that enhance both the tooth’s strength and appearance.
We value your input and, at Rise Dental Studio, consultations are conversations rather than one-sided dictation. This approach, combined with our advanced treatments, keeps your health needs and aesthetic preferences at the forefront.
Root Canals
A root canal is an essential dental treatment with a very high success rate, which saves and restores teeth affected by any of the following:
- Deep decay
- Infection
- Trauma
At Rise Dental Studio, our highly skilled endodontist, Dr. Pat Ng-a-Fook, is dedicated to providing you with expert care and a painless root canal experience. After we’ve carefully examined the tooth visually and with x-rays and established the need for a root canal, we will:
- Begin by administering anesthesia to ensure a painless procedure.
- Dr. Pat will remove the infected or damaged dental pulp.
- Next, he’ll clean the tooth's interior.
- Finally, Dr. Pat will seal the tooth with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection.
- Root canals almost always result in the placement of a crown to restore the tooth's strength and appearance. A dental crown is custom-designed to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and functional restoration.
By entrusting your root canal treatment to Dr. Ng-a-Fook, you can expect a professional, efficient, and compassionate dental experience that will preserve your oral health and revitalize your smile.
Dental Crowns
Our dental crowns offer diverse benefits and cater to various dental problems, from restorative to cosmetic. Dental crown materials available at Rise Dental Studio include:
- Porcelain: The tried-and-true dental crown material, porcelain crowns are uniquely natural-looking and make great restorations for front teeth especially.
- Emax: This lithium disilicate glass-ceramic dental crown material is giving porcelain crowns a run for their money because it is also very natural looking but boasts even more durability.
- Zirconia: Zirconia is a monolithic dental crown material, meaning it’s milled from a single block. While it doesn’t quite compete with Emax and porcelain in terms of translucence, its unmatched durability makes it ideal for restoring back teeth.
Our team is experienced and skilled in providing both conventional and implant-supported crowns, the latter being called for if a tooth is entirely missing or its root is damaged. Dr. Rashbaum or Dr. Chartz, along with our knowledgeable office manager, Abi, will be so happy to help you make the best choice for your tooth and your lifestyle! Dental Bridges
Dental bridges fill in the spaces left by missing teeth, bridging the gap and restoring function and aesthetics to your smile. While crowns are perfect for restoring single teeth, especially (but not exclusively) when the root is intact, bridges are often appropriate when multiple adjacent teeth are missing. (Bridges can replace a single tooth, however, if an implant isn’t an option.) Our dental bridge types include:
- Conventional: This type of bridge is the most common, and it utilizes the adjacent teeth on either side of the pontics (prosthetic teeth) as anchors.
- Implant-supported: Implant-supported bridges rely on dental implants for support instead of neighboring teeth. For patients who are candidates for this type of bridge, it may help to prevent bone loss better than a conventional bridge or partial denture.
- Maryland: A Maryland bridge is typically employed to replace just one or two missing front teeth, and it requires less alteration of the neighboring teeth compared to a conventional bridge. Metal “wings” are bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth, and while a Maryland bridge may not be as stable as a conventional one, replacement is relatively easy and inexpensive.
- Cantilever: A cantilever bridge works just like a conventional bridge but with only one anchoring tooth instead of two. Cantilevers are typically used when adjacent teeth on only one side of the gap are available for support.
Your choice between bridge types will come down to a few factors including jaw bone density, the health of your neighboring teeth, and cost. We’ll be so glad to take the time to develop a treatment plan that suits your dental health, budget, and lifestyle. All-on-4 Implants
This highly stable and natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures is changing lives. It may sound like hyperbole, but All-on-4 full-arch teeth replacements offer some remarkable benefits, including:
- Reliable stability and the security of implants with no clicking or slipping
- The ease and convenience of caring for them similarly to your natural teeth (no removing and soaking on the nightstand)
- Full functionality of natural teeth without food restrictions
- The aesthetic benefits of natural teeth (You can be proud to show your vibrant smile!)
For patients who prefer or require traditional dentures, we do offer them too! Come on in for a consultation and chat with us about your best option. We will help you choose what’s best for your oral health and lifestyle.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the foundation for so much restorative dentistry. They provide long-lasting and stable support to various restorations, including dental crowns, bridges, and All-on-4 dentures. When indicated, dental implants offer the following benefits:
- A strong replacement tooth root
- Restored function and aesthetics
- Bone loss prevention
- Preservation of facial structure
- Protection of nearby teeth from later loss
If you ever need a dental implant to support a tooth restoration, our experienced and skilled periodontists and prosthodontist are here to guide you through the treatment process, keeping you informed and pain-free!
